Everything is Possible, But Nothing is Real
I’ve been listening to Living Colour a lot lately and have been struck by the poignancy of their lyrics. Case in point, check out the chorus and first verse from the first single from their 1990 album Time’s Up, “Type” —
[Verse 1]
Corporate religion
Televangahypnotism
Suffer till you die
For the sweet-bye-and-bye
Science and technology
The new mythology
Look deep inside
Empty
[Chorus]
We are the children of concrete and steel
This is the place where the truth is concealed
This is the time when the lie is revealed
Everything is possible, but nothing is real
Scary right? Over 30 years later and yet their commentary is still as potent as ever.
Sh*t’s Gonna Get Ugly
So, yeah…about that Supreme Court leak.
I make a concerted effort to not talk about politics online anymore. Especially on social media. There’s just no point. People have their positions and beliefs and no amount of online back-and-forth is going to change that. Especially on the big, emotional issues. And what issue is bigger and more emotional than the big A?
To me, this issue is very cut and dry. Unless you are the woman who is pregnant, the man who impregnated her, (depending on the ages of those individuals) their parents, or someone who is willing to take on the responsibility for that child for at least the next 18 years, your opinion does not matter. I know that this may sound harsh or callous but that’s how I see it.
This issue is hard and complicated and has devolved into mindless sloganeering. Unfortunately, it seems like this country is about to take a real step in the direction of turning polemic talking points into actual law. Because of this, our already fractured and ugly partisan politics is only going to get worse.
What we all need now, more than anything, is some grace and kindness. Please.
One Band, 5 Songs
Hailing from Oklahoma City, OK, and forming in 1989, The Nixons found fame in the mid-'90s with their song "Sister." After their follow-up failed to produce another "hit" (most likely an effect of a major label system that snatched up every "alternative" band that they could in the early to the middle part of the decade, looking for the next Nirvana, with no actual plan on how to nurture or grow any of them once they were milked for that first hit) they recorded a fourth album before quietly calling it a day in 2000. In 2017 the band reunited and since then has released a bevy of singles and an EP.
