Heavy Metal Strikes Back?
God This Show is Ridiculous
I started watching Riverdale pretty soon after its first season hit Netflix. Yes, it was goofy and the dialogue was...something, but the show had a charm and I was hooked. Fast forward to this, the fourth season, and truth be told, I just couldn't get into it. Then yesterday I saw this Buzzfeed headline -- I Can’t Believe The Plot Of “Riverdale” Anymore, So Here Are 25 Things That Really Happened This Week. Obviously, I had to click the link and see what was all the fuss was about. Then I saw this gem of a screenshot --
Despite losing interest in the show, I am super excited about the upcoming crossover with the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina's Kiernan Shipka reprising her role as Sabrina Spellman on Riverdale. THAT I've got to see!!!
Apparently Heavy Metal is Dangerous Again
At least according to some angry parents in Canada, it is.
Parents of high school students in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada have started a petition to remove a school official because of the classic heavy metal band Iron Maiden.
Close to 400 people have signed the Change.org petition to transfer Eden High School Principal Sharon Burns.
IHeartRadio reported that the petition was started by Debbi Lynn.
"As concerned parents with impressionable children at Eden High School in St. Catharines, Ontario, we are deeply disturbed that the principal assigned to the school blatantly showed Satanic symbols and her allegiance to Satanic practices on her public social media platforms where all the students can see them under @edenprincipal (not her personal account)," the petition said.
On Friday, an update on the petition said they didn't want to remove Burns because of her love for Iron Maiden but because of "openly displaying her OWN handmade sign with the 666 clearly displayed on it."
Did I wake up in the mid-1980s? Is Tipper Gore still a thing? This is truly bizarre.
Thankfully not all of the local parents agree.
A petition in support of Burns had more than 10,000 supporters by Friday night.
"It is ridiculous that a couple of parents only judge her role as a principal only based on an instagram post. (About liking the band Iron Maiden. That's it.) Eden High School is a public school. Not a Christian school. If you somehow don't like the principal of your child, grandchild, relative etc.'s school, then send them to another one," it said.
I’m just worried that some parent is going to take issue with the fact that Burns admits to liking ska in her Twitter bio.
I Never Thought I Would See the Day...
That People Magazine would cover a punk rock festival. And yet they did.
Headline of the Week
8 WAYS GRUNGE MADE ROCK LESS DOUCHEY
Isn't that great?!? It's also pretty accurate. For the TL/DR crowd, the eight ways were --
1. Their Live Show Was Focused on the Music Rather Than the Visual
2. Fashion Became Less Flashy
3. The Music Became More of a Unified Effort
4. The Lyrics Became Less About Partying + More About Real Life
5. They Rejected Traditional Measures of Success
6. Women Were Treated More as Equals
7. They Bashed Any Form of Discrimination
8. They Were All Unique
I'm not sure about that last one but otherwise, I think Loudwire got this right.
Pick of the Week: The Yearbook by Baby Queen
Sometimes getting inundated with press release emails is a pain but every so often they bring you something (or someone) that you probably would have never found otherwise.
Enter Baby Queen and her full-length debut The Yearbook.
Back in February, I received a press release for "Rising anti-pop star royalty Baby Queen" and her single “These Drugs.” Intrigued, I checked out the video and was immediately hooked.
Fast-forward to now. The Yearbook has been out for two months and it becomes more captivating and poignant every time I listen to it. Baby Queen has produced one of the most thought-provoking and deeply personal albums of the year. It’s also, easily, one of 2021’s best.
One Band, 5 Songs
This week, the podcast covered the career of punk legends Rancid. The show is available exclusively on Spotify and is waiting for your ears right now!
Next week on the pod I’m talking about a newer artist who recently dropped their third album.
So Long for Now…
That’s it for this week. Please stay safe, be kind, and
