I have not been looking forward to the end of Superman & Lois. Last week I wrote, “I am not ready for this show to be over, and I am not ready to say goodbye to this cast and these characters.” Having watched the series finale “It Went By So Fast,” I still believe that “(f)our seasons just weren’t enough.” Still, in a million years I could not imagine a more satisfying and perfect ending to this series or a better send-off to this version of the Superman mythos and its characters.
This is the perfect ending because the cast, crew, and creators all get it. They understand what makes Superman an inspirational character. They know what makes Superman special and important. It’s not the powers or the battles or any of that. It’s nothing dark, gritty, or edgy. In fact, it’s the opposite. Just listen to what Clark Kent himself Tyler Hoechlin had to say (emphasis mine) —
Well well, today’s the day. I feel like the time is right to send out this note. A note of gratitude and appreciation for the opportunity of a lifetime. And believe it or not, I don’t mean getting “to be Superman.” At least not directly. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of something so much bigger than myself. I regard that as one of the greatest gifts any of us can receive. I appreciate the wonderful community of people that believe in what Superman stands for: hope, decency, empathy, compassion, respect, a love for humanity, and doing the right thing.
Hope. Decency. Empathy. Compassion. Respect. Love for humanity. Doing the right thing.
That’s Superman. That’s Lois Lane. That’s Smallville. And that’s Superman & Lois.
But hey, don’t take my word for it. Comics legend Marv Wolfman agrees.
Praise from Marv Wolfman. Wow!
