Shredding, Mullets, Emotion, and Ice
Shredding the News
This is such a great story. While covering the free skateboarding lessons being given by “Mr. Premium” at a nearly completed skate park in Detroit, Local 4 WDIV Detroit reporter Victor Williams took the opportunity to show off some of his own shredding skills.
And if that wasn’t cool enough, he caught the attention of skateboarding legend Tony Hawk.
Needless to say, I think this was a good day for Mr. Williams. Now if only more reporters could be this cool.
Why Would You Want to Own This?
Recently I was standing in line at a 7-Eleven and overheard a conversation between two folks in their middle ages complaining about "kids these days." Pretty basic, old man yells at rain stuff, until I realized what they were complaining about specifically. Mullets. They were talking about mullets. This is apparently a thing with young jock males, especially those who play baseball. So Person A was acting all superior to these kids because they themselves had rocked the mullet as a kid (I literally heard this person say "What, you think you invented this haircut?").
Hearing members of an older generation deride the youth of today is not a new phenomenon. In fact, it is probably as old as civilization itself. That having been said, I am so sick and tired of hearing it. People love to crap on the young and bemoan about how much things were better "back in my day." Well, I'm calling b.s. The world is a pretty messed up place right now and there were some great times in the past but come on. Whatever era you came from was not automatically better than now and it is beyond arrogant to think so. It's also kind of silly. There is nothing with being nostalgic for your youth or feeling more connected to the music and movies of your teens and 20s. There's also nothing wrong with not understanding the hip new trends of the day because, and this might be a shocking revelation to some, it is not for you! And just because you don't like or understand whatever it is, does not mean that it is inherently bad. Okay?
But of all of the trends that have made comebacks, why in the world would anyone want to claim the mullet?!?
On top of that…why has the mullet made a comeback and how does it have its own championship?!?
Something to Ponder
Throughline is an excellent podcast from NPR and recently on Twitter, they asked an excellent question.
Anxiety? Depression? Fear? I really don’t know, but I suspect that whatever emotion it is, is a negative one.
One Band, 5 Songs
This week, the podcast covered the career, up to this point at least, of one of the best new bands of the last ten years — illuminati hotties! The show is available exclusively on Spotify and is waiting for your ears right now!
Next week, we dive into the career of one of the most underappreciated bands to come from Dallas, TX.
Look, I Know That I Am Weird, But…
When I ask for extra ice in my drink (unsweet tea for those wondering), I mean EXTRA ICE. I want that cup filled to the brim, if not over, with ice. Please, and thank you.
That’s It For Now…
To quote one Mr. Rob Liefeld, “you know the drill, you are going to stay safe” and
